The Dead Planet Series is a dystopian cyberpunk series set in the distant future.
This is a short story. It serves as a prequel to Dead Planet The Complete Dead Planet Series.
It is twenty-five hundred years in the future and Serus Blackwell is a policeman. His job, though, is not to uphold the law, but to kill political targets within The Syndicate, the centralized government on Mars. As a member of The Agency he is feared by many, but some targets refuse to go down quietly.
Step into the world ruled by The Syndicate in this cyberpunk thriller today!
The Policeman A Dead Planet Short Story The Dead Planet Series eBook Drew Avera
Set on a future Mars, Serus Blackwell is a Policeman working for the Agency in the city of Archea. The Policemen are often assigned by the Syndicate, a ruling class of business owners, to assassinate people who break the rules or pose obstacles to the Syndicate’s goals.Thom, a ruddy-cheeked redhead, is still in training. Serus has taken him under his wing and plans to give him a good chance at becoming a Policeman. Their current assignment is a businesswoman, Mira Taggert, who has been embezzling funds in order to secure her won wealth. The Syndicate doesn’t take kindly to this.
This short story has some cool tech but not as much as I expected. The Policemen have their fancy gauntlets that are wired into their nerves and fire a devastating laser. That was pretty cool. However, the city itself comes off as a bit rundown and shabby. Perhaps this was intended.
Serus himself is an interesting character. He has some inner conflicts going on. His deep need to still be human on some level conflicts with the Policeman training and brainwashing. That constant internal fight has left him a little gaunt, a little ragged. He comes off as a tortured fellow that you just want to make a cup of tea and ask him to have sit down.
In this little tale, we learn that the Policemen can indeed be hurt. I found this bit of human frailty both exciting and amusing. After all, the Policemen are kind of sanctioned bullies. So it’s good to see that sometimes the targets can get in some good hits. If you’re thinking about checking out the series, this is a good intro. The ebook version contains a lengthy excerpt from Book 1, Exodus.

The Policeman A Dead Planet Short Story The Dead Planet Series eBook Drew Avera Reviews
The Policeman is a science fiction thriller set far into the future, yet the characters are believable and well sketched. Even though I had read the first book of The Dead Planet series (long ago) and had traces of that story still lingering, this prequel is very taut, and I mean it keeps the tension throughout. The story propelled me forward at run afraid of stumbling. It was only when I got to the end and saw the excerpt of the book I had read lying there and was sorely tempted to read again.
Bravo Mr. Avera!! You write a good story
This is an entertaining short story that apparently provides a glimpse into a much larger story. There's enough detail here to give an idea of the general atmosphere and setting of that big picture, and the brief narrative involving the hit on an enemy of the shadowy "Syndicate" offers some intriguing thrills. But this is more like a prologue or first chapter, not a standalone story. Intentional, but I would have preferred something a bit more concrete or finalized. Aside from that and a few formatting/grammar issues, it's still a solid excursion into an evidently grim future world. More promising than triumphant, but still quite promising.
I'm trying to become familiar with this genre and thought I'd try Mr. Avera's short story because it was free. I wasn't expecting much - as a matter of fact, I had no idea what to expect - but I was hooked from the first page. WOW! Like the subject line says - I can't wait to read more from this author! Since it's a short story I'm not going to go into detail about the plot; just read it - you won't be sorry! I loved the gauntlet bit, and also that the main character had a sensitivity about him.I think it would make a great TV series - similar to Almost Human. I also read the excerpt of Mr. Grimm, which is at the end of The Policeman, and that grabbed me also.
The Policeman (a short story) The Dead Planet Series by Drew Avera
This is a short story with a great introduction to Serus Blackwell, from the Dead Planet Series. He is a police officer on Mars, in 2400. But he is not an ordinary police officer, his job is to kill political people of The Syndicate. The Syndicate is the group of people who rule Mars and they are not the most honest or kindest people on the planet.
I highly suggest(sci-fi lovers) read The Policeman (a short story) The Dead Planet Series either before or after Dead Planet Book 1 Exodus by Drew Avera. You won't be disappointed!
Boring dull conversation between a senior and junior "cop" carrying out a hit for The Syndicate. Gave up at 6%. Too many odd grammatical problems, confusing sentences. "... his plump cheeks and red hair that was combed back and held in place with product." Hair held in place with product?
This was a short story/sampler provided by the author on Goodreads for a review. It’s about Serus Blackwell, a Policeman (translation Hired Assassin). There are some fun technological gizmos in this story, chief of which is a a “gauntlet,” a weapon strapped to the wrist which has neural leads that control both range and intensity of laser-based weaponrly. Policemen aren’t supposed to have contact with their families, but Serus has managed to secretly visit his sister Kara. Serus discovers Kara has been identified as a hit victim, and sets out to find out who and why. Oh, yeah, seems that Serus’s father was assassinated by the very agency he works for, which makes for some tension (but emotions are programmed out of Policemen). Mild spoiler Kara gets rescued, and is about to tell Serus and his mentor Tomas the reason she had had a hit put out on her when the story ends (ARRRRRRGHHH!!). So I was hooked, but at the end of the story the author offers to provide a free copy of the book of which this story is a prequel, “Dead Planet; Exodus Book 1,” which I duly requested and have received, and will read and review. I liked this story, very engaging (certainly more detail than is presented in this review, but I don’t want to spoil the fun). Four stars for Mr. Avera.
I just did not get it. There was not enough there to even give an in-depth description of the policemen other than they work as hit men for a corporation, one was training the other, and the mark looked a lot like his sister. I noticed one reviewer was confused enough to think the mark was the cop's sister! This was not enough information to be more than a piece that was left out of a book. I am sorry to sound harsh but I want to give enough description for the author to perhaps fix this excerpt pretending to be a story.
